From Clun Castle we start our walk with a meander through the ancient streets of Clun, still retaining much of its Norman Grid pattern there is a timeless feel about the village and there is much to see. After tarrying awhile in Clun we head for the hills via the meadows and hazel lined green lanes that lie between the Rivers Clun and Unk. Leaving the lowlands behind we climb the broad ridge of Cefns to be rewarded with wonderful views of the upper Clun Valley to the West.
Descending past Worms Wood, we again pick up the River Unk at Birches Mill and follow its course to Cefn Einion and Reilth Farm. From the farm we climb to reveal views of the Unk valley winding away below us. Eventually we reach Reilth Top, at 1280 feet, our high point of the day. The Shropshire Way takes us to Middle Woodbatch, with distant views towards Bishop’s Castle and the Long Mynd.
We continue, skirting the lower slopes of Henley Wood, to arrive at valley bottom where we follow a stream to reach the wooded Cwmmawr Dingle. We emerge from the Dingle above Bishop’s Castle where it is a short walk to our journeys end.
